Description

This remarkable antique Burmese Buddha statue, measuring 57.7 cm in height and weighing 8.6 kg, embodies the rich tradition of Buddhist art from Burma (now Myanmar). Dating back to the 16th century, this statue showcases the exquisite craftsmanship characteristic of that era, with a beautifully aged patina that enhances its historical significance.

The statue depicts the Buddha in a seated position, representing tranquility and wisdom, surrounded by two smaller figures believed to be his disciples. This arrangement symbolizes the dissemination of knowledge and teachings, central to Buddhist philosophy.

The piece incorporates the Ava style, known for its elegance and detailed artistry, reflective of the cultural transitions that occurred during the Ava period in Burma. As Buddhism flourished in the region, such artifacts became crucial in representing spiritual and artistic values.

The Buddha's right hand is positioned in the Bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture that signifies the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called upon the Earth to witness his attainment of Nirvana. This mudra emphasizes the themes of grounding and reality, vital in Buddhist teachings.

Owning this statue not only connects one to a profound spiritual tradition but also serves as a testament to the historical narrative and aesthetic beauty of Burmese culture. This exquisite piece will make a striking addition to any collection of fine art or Buddhist memorabilia.
