Description

This exquisite Old Wooden Shan Buddha statue, originating from Burma (Myanmar), showcases a sophisticated craftsmanship reflective of the region's rich artistic heritage. Crafted in the mid-20th century, this statue stands at an impressive height of 69 cm and features a serene expression typical of Buddhist iconography, which emphasizes tranquility and inner peace.

The Buddha is depicted in a sitting position, with crossed legs and hands resting in a significant gesture known as the Bhumisparsha mudra, or "Earth-touching" posture. This gesture symbolizes the moment when the Buddha called the Earth to witness his enlightenment, representing triumph over the temptations of Mara.

The statue is constructed from wood and has been painted with age-old techniques that highlight intricate details, including delicate facial features and the flowing robe, which are characteristic of Shan artistic style. The color palette showcases a blend of earthy tones, suggesting a harmony with nature.

Burma has a long history of Buddhist influence, with the religion shaping its culture, architecture, and arts for centuries. The Shan region, in particular, is known for its unique blending of influences from both the Buddhist traditions of Myanmar and neighboring regions. This statue not only serves as a spiritual symbol but also as a historical artifact, providing insight into the enduring legacy of Buddhist art in Burma.
