Description

This large antique wooden Burmese Mandalay Buddha is a striking piece from the 19th century, reflecting the artistry of the early Mandalay period in Burma (Myanmar). Standing at 105 cm tall and gilded with 24 karat gold, this statue captures the serene essence of Buddhist iconography. The craftsmanship displays the rich cultural heritage and spiritual significance of Buddhism in Myanmar, where such pieces are often venerated in temples and homes.

The Meditative pose of this Buddha, characteristically seen in Mandalay sculptures, conveys a sense of tranquility and enlightenment. The Bhumisparsha mudra, which is associated with the moment of enlightenment when Buddha called the Earth to witness his claims to Buddhahood, adds profound meaning to this statue. The intricate details and expressions illustrate the skilled artisanship that flourished in the Mandalay region, particularly during its golden age.

This piece not only serves as a decorative item but also as a connection to the historical and religious tapestry of Burma. Its weight of 39.7 kg speaks to its solid construction, while its dimensions of 51 cm wide and 46 cm deep ensure it makes a commanding presence in any space.
