Description

This exquisite large antique Mandalay Buddha, standing at 96 cm, showcases the artistry of 19th-century Burma, known today as Myanmar. Crafted from wood and gilded in 24-karat gold, this statue exemplifies the meticulous craftsmanship characteristic of the Mandalay period, a significant time for Buddhist art and culture.

The statue features porcelain eyes, which add a lifelike quality to its serene expression. The prominent Bhumisparsha mudra, or "Earth Touching" gesture, conveys the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment when he called upon the Earth as a witness to his realization. This gesture is central to Buddha iconography, symbolizing grounding, stability, and the quest for truth.

Historically, Mandalay was a prominent center for the arts, particularly during the last kingdom of Burma. The region was renowned for its skilled artisans who produced religious and cultural artifacts that reflect the deep-rooted spiritual heritage of the area. This Buddha statue, with its dimensions of 81 cm wide and 53 cm deep, serves not only as a focal point for meditation and reflection but also as a profound representation of Burmese cultural history. Its antique charm and spiritual resonance make it a timeless piece that invites admiration and reverence.
