Description

This very rare original bronze Pagan Buddha originates from Burma (Myanmar) and dates back to the 12th century. The Bagan (Pagan) period was an era renowned for its rich religious art and architecture in the region. The statue stands 54 cm high and shows traces of gold plating on the face, indicating a thicker gilding layer than is typically achieved with gold leaf.

The Bagan style is known for its refined detailing and expressive postures, conveying the serenity and wisdom of the Buddha. The statue is heavy and weighs 6.97 kilograms, with dimensions of 15.5 cm in width and 14 cm in depth. A comparable statue can be found at the Guimet Museum in Paris, though with a less attractive patina.

Included is an Oxford Authentication TL test (number: N123m80), which confirms the authenticity and age of the piece. This statue is not only a fragment of history but also a beautiful example of the artistic traditions of Burma, which have been preserved and appreciated over time.
