This antique wooden panel, originating from an 18th-century temple chariot in India, beautifully depicts the goddess Lakshmi, a revered figure in Hindu mythology associated with wealth, prosperity, and well-being. Measuring 45.3 cm in height, the panel showcases intricate craftsmanship, capturing Lakshmi seated gracefully and flanked by two elephants. This iconography, known as Gaja-Lakshmi, symbolizes abundance and the nurturing aspects of nature.

The elephants, traditionally associated with royalty and strength, hold water pots or lotus flowers, further enhancing the panel's significance as a portrayal of fertility and sustenance. The ornate detailing in the woodwork reflects the artistic traditions of Indian temple art, where each element serves a symbolic purpose, contributing to a holistic representation of divine blessings.

This piece not only serves as a striking decorative object but also carries a rich history reflective of India's spiritual heritage and artistic expression. Temples often featured such panels as both functional and ceremonial objects in processions, celebrating the cultural importance of deities in daily life. The panel stands as a significant piece of Indian history, offering a window into the craftsmanship and devotional practice of its time.
