Description

This exquisite antique wooden Burmese Shan Buddha, originating from Myanmar, stands at a height of 47.5 cm and is meticulously gilded with 24-karat gold, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship of the 18th century. The statue captures the serene essence of Buddhist artistry, characterized by its graceful posture and detailed facial features, which emanate a sense of calm and enlightenment.

The Shan style, known for its elegant lines and soft expressions, reflects a rich cultural heritage influenced by both local traditions and broader Southeast Asian practices. The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, a significant gesture symbolizing the moment of enlightenment, where Buddha calls the Earth to witness his victory over Mara, the embodiment of temptation and distraction. This mudra carries profound meaning, representing the steadfastness of the spirit and a deep connection to the Earth.

Myanmar has a long-standing tradition of Buddhist practice, with the Shan people holding a prominent place in the country’s diverse cultural landscape. The craftsmanship of this statue is a testament to the skilled artisans who have, for centuries, drawn inspiration from spiritual teachings and natural beauty. As a piece of history, this statue not only serves as a decorative artifact but also as a conduit for meditation and reflection on the profound teachings of Buddhism.
