This antique wooden Burmese Shan Buddha, dating back to the early 19th century, is a remarkable representation of the Shan (Tai Yai) style. Crafted from wood and gilded with 24 karat gold, this statue stands at 29 cm in height, 15.5 cm wide, and 8.7 cm deep, weighing 782 grams. The fine detailing showcases the artistic skill inherent in Burmese craftsmanship during this period.

The Shan people, primarily located in the mountainous regions of Myanmar, have a rich cultural heritage that reflects the influence of both Buddhism and local traditions. This Buddha embodies the serene presence of the Buddha, evoking feelings of peace and contemplation. The Bhumisparsha mudra, depicted by the Buddha's gesture of touching the earth, signifies the moment of enlightenment, where the earth is called to witness Siddhartha Gautama’s attainment of Buddhahood.

Buddhism plays a significant role in Myanmar's history, shaping its art, culture, and identity. The intricate design and historical significance of this statue make it a profound cultural artifact, representing not only the spiritual beliefs of the Shan people but also the artistic legacy of Burma. Owning this piece allows one to appreciate the depth of its craftsmanship and the cultural history it represents.
