Description

This exquisite antique wooden Burmese Shan Buddha, measuring 13.6 cm tall, is a remarkable artifact from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Dating back to the 19th century, this beautifully gilded statue is adorned with 24-karat gold, showcasing the skill of the artisans from the Shan State, known for their intricate craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage.

The Shan style, or Tai Yai, is characterized by its naturalistic and serene representation of the Buddha. The Buddha is depicted seated in a meditational pose that captures a sense of peace and enlightenment. Notably, the statue reflects both the spiritual significance and artistic expression found in Burmese culture, where Buddhism plays a central role in daily life and societal values.

The mudra, known as Bhumisparsha, symbolizes the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called the Earth to witness his attainments. This powerful gesture emphasizes themes of stability and grounding, resonating deeply within Buddhist teachings.

Myanmar has a rich history of Buddhism that has influenced its art, culture, and architecture for centuries, fostering a deep connection to tradition and spirituality. This antique statue not only serves as a decorative piece but also as a testament to the enduring legacy of Burmese craftsmanship and spiritual belief.
