Description

This exquisite pair of antique wooden Burmese monk statues hails from Myanmar, specifically from the Mandalay region, renowned for its rich artistic heritage. Crafted in the 19th century, each statue reaches a height of 32.5 cm and is adorned with a gilding of 24 karat gold, enhancing their spiritual and aesthetic value. The careful detail in their expressions and posture reflects the artistry of the period, which aimed to encapsulate the serenity and dedication of the monastic life.

The statues depict monks in a posture that signifies reverence and respect, often linked with the Namaskara mudra, a gesture of salutation and homage. This mudra plays a significant role in Buddhist practices, embodying humility and devotion.

Burma has a long-standing tradition of woodcraft and sculpture, where artisans blended spiritual beliefs with artistic expression. The use of wood as a medium allows for intricate designs and lightweight structures, making these statues not only visually captivating but also easy to display. Weighing 4.6 kg, they are both substantial and delicate in design.

As cultural artifacts, these statues give a glimpse into the spiritual life of Buddhists in Burma while serving as stunning decor for any environment, bridging the old with the new in a meaningful way.
