Description

This Antique Burmese Shan Buddha, measuring 61.5 cm in height, exemplifies the exquisite craftsmanship of the 18th century in Burma (Myanmar). Gilded with 24-karat gold and featuring intricate lacquerware, this statue not only reflects the spiritual essence of Buddhism but also showcases the artistic expression prevalent among the Shan people, known as the Tai Yai.

The distinctive Shan style is characterized by its graceful features, ornate headdress, and delicate embellishments, all of which signify the heavenly nature of the Buddha. The statue's detailed facial expressions and carefully crafted attire provide insight into the rich cultural narrative and religious traditions of the region.

This particular representation of the Buddha is depicted in a Bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture that symbolizes the "Earth Touching" moment when the Buddha called upon the Earth to bear witness to his enlightenment. As a result, it serves as a powerful reminder of spiritual awakening and transcendence.

Burma, steeped in a tapestry of history and spirituality, has produced countless works of art that embody both religious fervor and artistic heritage. Collecting such an antique piece allows one to appreciate not only the aesthetics but also the cultural significance and historical legacy embedded within each figure. This Antique Burmese Shan Buddha stands as a remarkable embodiment of faith, craftsmanship, and history.
