Description

This antique bronze Shan Buddha stands at 28.5 cm tall and weighs 1.77 kg, reflecting the exquisite craftsmanship of the 18th century. Originating from Burma (Myanmar), this statue embodies the artistic traditions of the Shan people, known for their rich cultural heritage that harmonizes influences from both indigenous and neighboring communities.

The Shan style, also referred to as Tai Yai, is characterized by elongated forms and a serene expression, capturing the essence of tranquility and meditation. The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, symbolizing the moment of enlightenment when Buddha called the Earth to witness his quest for truth. This gesture signifies strength, stability, and the overcoming of temptation.

Burma's history as a center for Buddhism has led to a proliferation of artistic representations of the Buddha, serving both spiritual and decorative purposes. Collectors and enthusiasts of religious artifacts will appreciate the historical significance and the meticulous details in the statue's design, from the intricate hair curls to the gentle curve of the lips.

This piece is not only a reflection of Shan artistic tradition but also a testament to the enduring legacy of Buddhism in Myanmar, making it a compelling addition to any collection focused on religious art or Asian history.
