This antique bronze Shan Buddha, originating from Burma (Myanmar), reflects the rich heritage of Southeast Asian craftsmanship during the late 18th to early 19th century. Standing at 48 cm tall, this statue is an exemplary representation of the Shan style, also known as Tai Yai, which features distinct characteristics such as a serene facial expression and elongated earlobes, indicative of the Buddha's princely past.

Historically, the Shan people, primarily residing in northern Thailand and Myanmar, have been influenced by various cultures, including Burmese and Indian, which is evident in the artistic details of this piece. While the two monks that may have originally accompanied this statue are missing, the remaining figure stands alone with a powerful presence.

The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture symbolizing the moment of enlightenment. In this pose, the Buddha invites the Earth to bear witness to his awakening, a significant moment in Buddhist tradition. The textural details and patina of the bronze signify its age and the reverence it has received over the years.

The history of Buddhism in Burma dates back to the 11th century, deeply affecting the cultural and artistic expressions in the region. This particular statue not only embodies spiritual significance but also serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Burmese artistry and devotion.
