Description

This antique bronze opium weight, originating from Burma (Myanmar) and dating back to the 19th century, stands at a height of 5 cm and weighs 160 grams. Crafted from bronze, its design and form exhibit the intricate artistry characteristic of Burmese culture during this era.

Historically, opium weights were utilized in trade to balance the weight of opium, which was a significant commodity in Southeast Asia. The statues often featured symbolic representations, with this particular piece likely depicting a mythical creature sacred to local traditions, reflecting the region's rich spiritual heritage.

The craftsmanship showcases remarkable attention to detail, evident in the intricate carvings and the polished surface. Each weight served not only a practical purpose but also embodied cultural values, often symbolizing wealth and status within the community.

Burma has a long history woven with diverse influences, including indigenous traditions and those brought by traders and colonizers. The production of bronze artifacts flourished during the 19th century, aided by skilled artisans who maintained age-old techniques while incorporating new styles.

This opium weight not only serves as a functional object but also as a testament to the artistic and cultural milieu of 19th-century Burma, offering a window into the lives and beliefs of the people during that time.
