Description

This antique bronze opium weight, originating from Burma (Myanmar) in the 18th century, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Southeast Asia. Crafted with skilled artistry, this object features a stylized depiction of a bird, believed to resemble a rooster. In Burmese culture, the rooster symbolizes vigilance and prosperity, making it a fitting choice for a weight used in trading opium, a significant commodity in the region's historical economy.

Measuring 4.8 cm in height and 3.8 cm in width, this 150-gram bronze weight reflects the craftsmanship of its time. The use of bronze, a historically significant material, underscores the artistry prevalent in Burmese metalwork, which often combines both function and symbolic meaning. The object was typically employed in markets for trade, serving as a reliable measure of weight, a crucial aspect of commercial transactions in the era.

As a tangible piece of history, this opium weight encapsulates the economic practices of 18th-century Burma and highlights the artistic traditions that have shaped the nation's identity. It remains a valuable collectible for those interested in the historical context of trade and the cultural symbols embedded in everyday objects.
