A remarkable and rare 17th-century Ava sculpture, finely carved from marble and mounted on a later base and plinth. This refined artwork depicts Sumedha, a previous incarnation of the historical Buddha, Gautama. The piece was first acquired around 1990 in Old Finton, Godalming (Surrey), and has remained in the same family collection ever since.

According to Buddhist texts, Sumedha was a revered ascetic who, in a past life, expressed his unwavering resolve to become a Buddha. During his encounter with the Buddha Dipankara, he made this sacred vow. Dipankara is regarded in ancient scriptures and folklore as a Buddha of the distant past, who attained enlightenment countless eons before Gautama Buddha.

This serene marble sculpture presents Sumedha in deep devotion, a powerful symbol of dedication and the timeless path to enlightenment.
