Description

This exquisite 18th century Burmese Buddha statue, standing at 32.5 cm tall and weighing 4.14 kg, embodies the rich artistic tradition of Burma (Myanmar). Crafted from bronze, the statue showcases traces of its original 24 karat gilding, hinting at the opulence that once characterized its appearance.

The statue is designed in the Shan (Tai Yai) style, reflecting the diverse cultural influences throughout Burmese history. This artistic expression often draws from both indigenous traditions and those imported from neighboring regions, resulting in a unique synthesis that highlights the spiritual and aesthetic values of the time. The seated figure exhibits the Bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture of earth-touching, which signifies the Buddha's enlightenment and his overcoming of temptation, making it a powerful symbol of strength and perseverance.

Burma's history is deeply intertwined with Buddhism, which has shaped its culture, art, and architecture for centuries. The production of Buddhist sculptures flourished during the 18th century, marked by skilled artisans who dedicated their craft to portraying the teachings and likeness of the Buddha. This statue not only serves as a remarkable work of art but also offers a glimpse into the spiritual heritage and enduring legacy of the Buddhist tradition in Myanmar.
