Description

This 14-15th century Thai Buddha statue, originating from North Thailand, beautifully exemplifies the artistry of the period. Crafted from bronze, it stands at a height of 26 cm, resting on a base that measures 22.5 x 15 cm. The base has been removed, a decision likely linked to a historical scarcity of bronze, which prompted the repurposing of materials to create additional Buddha images.

The statue features the Bhumisparsha mudra, or the "earth-touching gesture," which symbolizes the moment of enlightenment, where the Buddha calls upon the Earth as his witness during his meditation under the Bodhi tree. This classic representation not only reflects the rich spiritual heritage of Buddhism but also serves as a testament to the profound cultural practices in Thailand, where Buddhism has been a major influence for centuries.

Thailand's history is deeply intertwined with the evolution of Buddhist art, particularly during this era, characterized by distinct regional styles and techniques. The craftsmanship displayed in this statue highlights the cultural significance and reverence for Buddhist teachings, making it a timeless piece of history and spirituality. Weighing 6.63 kg, this Buddha serves as both a decorative object and a focal point for meditation and contemplation.
